9 Summer Hair Color Trends, From Ocean Blue to Sun-Kissed Bronze
There are some clients who like to stay with the same classic (albeit flawless) hair colors, and others who are all about changing with the trends, switching their shade from season to season. For the latter, summer brings with it a chance to try out a new hue that’s way ahead of the curve. And after seeing the summer hair color trends of 2022, we can’t blame them for wanting to get experimental.
So, let’s delve into the biggest trends coming your way this summer. From pink balayage , to ocean blue, to blorange hair – bold, bright and beachy locks are coming in hot…
1. Stone Blonde Hair

Ash blonde has reigned supreme in the summer trend stakes for years, but stone blonde may be taking over. It’s still as cool and fresh, but with a brighter feel and more dimension. Like a pebble you might find on the coast, it shimmers with flecks of gray, beige and taupe, bringing new meaning to beachy hair. But how do you get the look? Here, Loïck Dambrine has swept strokes of BlondorPlex through his client’s hair, then toned with Color Touch 8/81 + 10/6 + 10/73 for a cool-toned finish.
2. Blorange Hair

Blonde meets orange in this pastel-colored trend that’s high on whimsical vibes. It’s sunshine in a hairdo, giving bright hair lovers a super summery glow. If your client is a fan of peach hair, blorange hair will be right up their alley, and creating the look couldn’t be simpler with light-reflective Illumina Color. Tone pre-lightened locks with 9/43 + 7/43 to recreate this sunny mane, then mist in a little EIMI Glam Mist for an added boost of shine.
3. Iced Caramel Espresso Hair

You already know that espresso hair was big through winter and spring. Now, get ready for the iced caramel edition; a slightly brighter take that feels refreshing as the temperatures rise. What you’re aiming for is a deep base with glimmers of lighter caramel tones (that’ll be the ice melting), so hair has a touch of dimension without being piecey or obviously highlighted. This one is a Color Touch creation, which you can recreate by toning pre-lightened sections with 8/35 or 8/0.
4. Pink Balayage

Another one for pastel hair fans is pink balayage, applied in any shade – from fluorescent fuchsia to soft ballet blush. Perfect for blondes, brunettes and redheads, this trend adds a fun infusion of color to mid-lengths and ends; perfect for giving locks a summery upgrade. We love it on a dark blonde mane for a beachy vibe, as seen in this Color Touch creation, featuring a mix of 7/73 + 0/00+ 55/65.
5. Auburn Blonde Hair

Redheads can enjoy a sun-kissed stroke of blonde this summer with the auburn blonde hair trend; usually styled out with a balayage or ombre technique for a seamless color melt. We’re especially obsessed with this take, which is high on contrasting tones of red and blonde, lending a sunset effect that feels on point for the season. Recreate the look by sweeping Koleston Perfect 6/45 + 0/45 + 0/56 from roots down to mid-lengths first, then allow it to develop for 10 minutes, before applying Blondor Freelights + 9% from mid-lengths to ends. Leave for a further 25 minutes, then rinse, shampoo and neutralize with Blondor Seal & Care. Finish by toning hair using 8/43 on the mid-lengths, and 10/03 on the ends.
6. Ocean Blue Hair

If pastel pinks aren’t your client’s thing and they’re craving a bolder hue, introduce them to ocean blue hair . It’s vivid, it’s vibrant, and it’s one trend that’s sure to get them noticed. Reminiscent of exactly where we want to be all summer long – right by the ocean – this shade was created using none other than Color Fresh CREATE. Lizzie Lane melted New Blue into Super Petrol for this major mermaid shade, then applied it over a full head of babylights for a multi-dimensional finish.
7. Sun-Kissed Bronze Hair

It’s not just your cheekbones that deserve a little bronzing in the summer months. Bronze hair is in, giving you and your clients a golden glow from head to toe. Warm and rich and luxurious, this trend relies on high-shine browns and bronde highlights, resulting in a bronzy effect when they’re gently intertwined. Try the trend with James Earnshaw’s formula, which includes Illumina Color 7/35 + 6% for what he calls a ‘minky bronze’, and 7/81 + 10/81 + 9% for the golden bronze tones.
8. Root Shadow with Highlights

‘Lived-in’ looks are becoming more and more popular, so it’s no surprise that a combo of a root shadow with highlights is high on the trend agenda for summer 2022. We’re making it easy with our new Mirror Lights service – part of the Koleston Perfect Lights concept – which sees a root shadow (which, bonus, offers up to 100% gray coverage) teamed with the most sun-kissed highlights around. Go for warm tones with this look; the rich, radiant brondes, the golden and honey blondes, or the auburn and cinnamon reds. With over 100+ shades, Koleston Perfect has you covered.
9. Nineties Blonde Hair

We predicted ‘bombshell blonde’ would be a huge hair color trend for 2022, and sure enough it’s taking off in all its pure platinum glory. Pamela Anderson is your inspiration here (which makes sense, as she’s been in the press a lot lately) so hark back to her Baywatch look by lifting blonde clients up to a level 9 or 10. Then, add a bright white toner, like Koleston Perfect 10/96, Illumina Color 10/69 or Color Touch 9/96. Your client will need a purple shampoo on hand to maintain their blonde hair, and INVIGO Cool Blonde Color Refreshing Shampoo is the ultimate pick.
