7 Formulas for the Prettiest Copper Red Hair

Formulas Color Trends

Precious metals have been inspiring some of our favorite hair color trends for the past few seasons, with everything from rose gold hair to sleek silver hues adding subtle shimmer. The next shade to take a shine to? Copper hair. Whether dialled up to a warm, rich orange tone, or down to a soft, coral shade, it’s the new go-to hue for an end-of-summer transformation.

So, get your clients to join the copper club this season – it’s nearly autumn, after all. If you keep scrolling, we’ve got four tried-and-true salon formulas to use, all by our Wella colorists…

True Copper

This is copper as we all know it: a beautiful balance of red and brown tones, with enough shine to earn its place in the metallic hair category. Charlotte Hickey created the tone by shading the root with Koleston Perfect 7/34, then brightened the mid-lengths using red and yellow shades of Color Fresh Create. The blend includes one tube of Future Yellow and a quarter of a tube of Next Red. The definition of a dream team, no?

Coral Copper

If your client is new to copper hues, try a softer shade to ease them in. We’re obsessed with this cool, coral copper, created by Shauna Forman. She started with a base of Illumina Color 7/43, painted babylights through random strands for extra lift, then toned using 9/03 blended with a dot of 0/65. The final touch was an overall glaze of Perfecton. Et, voila – a look that straddles the copper and peach hair color trends, perfect for all seasons.

Red Copper

For rich, glossy color that lights up any complexion, a copper that veers almost burgundy is the perfect shade. To achieve this bold hue, start with pre-lightened hair and follow Dario Araujo’s masterful blend. On the roots, he started by applying Koleston Perfect 33/66, followed by Blondor balayage through the mid-lengths that was toned using Koleston Perfect 6/45. Dreamy.

Orange copper

Bright and bold, this shade of copper boasts a striking orange edge. To get the look, do a root application of Koleston Perfect 77/43 mixed with 20 vol, then use the same KP blend mixed with 30 vol (1:2) to intensify the ends. Bump up the shine further by misting orange copper looks in EIMI Thermal Image and styling hair poker straight with Wella Pro Straight Color.
