Trends Styling

Let-it-loose waves went rock ‘n’ roll at Tommy Hilfiger’s spring/summer ’18 show, as the all-American designer hit the London Fashion Week circuit for the very first time. With hair teased and tousled by Wella Professionals, Gigi Hadid, Joan Smalls and Georgia May Jagger paraded down the coolest catwalk in town for the TommyXGigi Rock Circus.

And, it was none other than Wella Professionals Global Creative Director & ghd Ambassador, Eugene Souleiman, who created what we’re now calling ‘headbanging hair’. If three’s a trend, then raw, undone waves are officially in for SS18, with Tommy, Versus Versace and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi all championing the look.

But, for Tommy Hilfiger, it was a unique brand of textured ‘do that made the show stand out, with the cool girl at the concert serving as the ultimate inspiration.

“There was a real rock concert feel to the show this season and, for me, I wanted to create a look that was disheveled, raw and full of texture,” Eugene explained. “Each look was individual, diverse and imperfect. I created an anti-cosmetic approach to the hair – a juxtaposition to the glamorous make up look to allow the girls’ personalities to come through.

He added: “The feeling for me is still a Tommy Girl, just tougher and more urban. She’s not text book pretty or perfectly groomed straight from the salon. She just naturally throws things together, has her own individual style – the kind of girl everyone wants to be. Totally effortless.”

So, how do you get the Tommy Girl tousle? To start, Eugene spritzed roots with an abundance of Wella Professionals Elements Conditioning Leave in Spray. Then, to create broken movement, sections of hair were twisted around ghd Soft Curl Tongs, disrupting the natural texture and shaping rock concert-ready curves.

“For Georgia May Jagger, I twisted her hair into a low ponytail and sprayed with EIMI Perfect Setting,” said Eugene, “before letting the hair loose and diffusing with ghd Air Hair Dryer to create a natural wave. We sprayed a fine mist of EMI Sugar Lift to create separation and increase the movement.”

As for naturally voluminous hair, “[it] was tamed by flattening the roots with a hair net and blow dried with the ghd Air Hair Dryer to create a clean centre parting.”

To lock the rock-chick look down, EIMI Perfect Setting was lightly misted over every model’s hairstyle. Then, it was show-time, with every Tommy Girl looking like she’d spent the whole night dancing.
